Elders And Angry Citizens Write Pleas to Bankruptcy Judge (document)

The judge in charge of the bankruptcy case of Puerto Rico, Laura Taylor Swain, has established a policy of publishing letters she has received from citizens on a variety of manners.

'I have 90 and my wife has 88. We live off of the Social Security. We do not go to Las Vegas. We do not go on vacation. We only live quietly at home. I do not ask for much, just help us collect interests on the bonds of Puerto Rico,' states one of thoseletters signed by Albert S. Ferrandi, a resident of Puerto Rico.

Jerome E. Firsty, an 82-year veteran who has resided in Puerto Rico for 55 years, sent letters he had previously sent to Governor Ricardo Rosselló and to Senator Orrin Hatch to the judge, offering his services as a consultant on Puerto Rican affairs for a symbolic compensation of $1 a year.

On the other hand, the authorized public accountant (CPA), Eduardo A. Nin, as a bondholder, proposed to Swain that the right way to solve the debt problem would be that any reduction in the repayment of the bondholders goes in accord to what the bondholder actually paid. In his example to the judge, if an individual paid $100 for a $100 bond but an institution paid $50 for that same $100 bond, a 50% cut should not be applied to both equally because it would be unfair as the individual would lose half of what he paid but the institution would not lose anything because, at first, what he had paid was 50% of the value. 'Is that fair?,' He asked the judge.

A financial adviser told her in another letter that the Government of Puerto Rico must pay what it owes.

'The vertical power of Wall St. over our collations and balances is causing premature deaths in Puerto Rico. Premature death is not from God,' Carlos Sumpter wrote.

Also, the Mayaguez Pro West Development Movement wrote to the judge in order to give a different view from the 'powerful elite of San Juan who does not consider the needs and expectations of the Western Region.' Among the proposals of the group is to audit the debt and object that all Puerto Ricans have to pay parts of the debt that were to cover infrastructure and services for the Metro Area
