Fortaleza Establishes the ‘Office of Coffee in Puerto Rico'
The Secretary of Public Affairs in Fortaleza, Ramón Rosario Cortes, announced Wednesday the establishment of the Office of Coffee in Puerto Rico.
This office will be tasked with establishing the pricing and marketing for coffee, which was something previously assigned to the Puerto Rico Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO, by its Spanish acronym). Nonetheless, the agency will appoint consultants to determine the prices, striking a balance between the perspectives of consumers and agronomists.
This office will also work with the Semilla de Café ('Coffee Seed') and Compra y Venta de Café ('Coffe Sales and Purchases') programs, as well as the entire regulation and oversight for the coffee and specialty coffee markets in Puerto Rico.
'This office will be assigned to the Agricultural Enterprises Development Administration (ADEA, by its Spanish acronym) of the Department of Agriculture, and it will be led by an agronomist with over 10 years of experience in coffee-related matters,' Rosario Cortés explained.
The requirements for this position include being qualified to be Agricultural Program Director and being appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture, in consultation with the governor.
Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares will submit these three measures before the Legislative Assembly.
