Rosselló Says Seeking Statehood 'Is a Good Obsession' (video + gallery)

Pedro Rosselló was elected chairman of the Equality Commission seeking to have Puerto Rico join the United States.

This decision was made in a meeting held by all commission members, except for baseball player Iván Rodríguez, who participated via telephone but was not able to attend. During the subsequent press conference, Rosselló explained that Rodríguez had not been present in the meeting due to previous commitments abroad, but had been able to participate via video chat.

During the conference, the Commission chairman revealed that, so far, he and his team 'have established no initiatives with President Trump, the House of Representatives, or the Senate,' because it was only recently that the commission was formed. However, the current governor's father remarked that he would begin working soon.

'We won't go into a frenzy (to seek statehood). We'll do this in a rational manner,' Rosselló assured.

'What we're doing here is asking, requesting, demanding to have our rights acknowledged as US citizens residing in the island of Puerto Rico,' the former governor added.

The chairman of the Equality Commission also explained that their second meeting would be held in Washington DC, at the offices of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), which will also be their new headquarters.

'We're going to Washington to demand we be recognized,' Rosselló stressed. He later acknowledged that, in the past, there have been seven other delegations that sought statehood for their respective territories and Congress refused to recognize them, 'but they became the motive to advance the inclusion of those territories as states.'

'There are good obsessions, and there are bad obsessions. This (seeking statehood) is a good obsession,' Rosselló concluded.
